The Innovation Management (IM) team at DKFZ propels groundbreaking cancer research into practical, impactful applications, actively supporting researchers and industry partners in advancing discoveries that benefit patients and society. Across five specialized groups (see below) IM secures and develops intellectual property, builds alliances, and drives entrepreneurial ventures that bring pioneering therapies to the forefront. Under the strategic leadership of Chief Innovation Officer Rainer Wessel, IM orchestrates the transition from concept to cure, reinforcing DKFZ's role as a driving force for innovation, entrepreneurship, and progress in the battle against cancer.

Rainer Wessel brings a wealth of experience in innovation management and technology transfer, having led multiple initiatives bridging scientific discovery with industry applications. Known for his strategic approach and hands-on leadership, he has a proven track record of fostering collaborations that drive impactful solutions in the life sciences sector. As Chief Innovation Officer at DKFZ, he leads the Innovation Management team with a focus on accelerating cancer research advancements for patient benefit. His passion for precision and resilience shapes DKFZ's approach to innovation.

Their work reinforces DKFZ's role in translating research into applications that benefit society.

Led by Dirk Kuck this group expertly navigates the lifecycle of DKFZ's research projects, from initial validation to product development. Their focus on strategy and efficient project execution ensures that promising research moves seamlessly through development stages, bringing innovative cancer therapies closer to market.
Led by Karin Flieger, this group is dedicated to safeguarding DKFZ's intellectual property through robust patent strategies and technical contracts. They secure the foundations of collaboration by ensuring confidentiality and compliance in material transfer and license agreements. This team provides essential support for navigating the legal landscape to protect innovations at every stage.
Guided by Holger Hess-Stumpp, the Business Development team connects DKFZ with industry partners, creating avenues for cooperation that accelerate cancer research breakthroughs.
