Cancer care is one of the main components of all health systems, in Germany malignant neoplasms account for 19.9 billion Euros or about 6% of total German health care expenditure (343 billion Euros in 2015) (Statistisches Bundesamt, 2018). There is an important gap in the knowledge of how that money is spent and whether the potential benefits for patients are achieved. This is the the gap the economics of cancer aims at fulfilling.
