Immunological causes for radiosensitivity of HPV-driven HNSCC
HPV-driven head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs) constitute 80% of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas. They are characterized by a significant survival advantage over HPV-negative HNSCCs. In addition to better overall survival, HPV+ HNSCCs are more sensitive to irradiation than their HPV-negative counterparts. The main goal of this project was to determine if there is a link between the increased radiosensitivity of HPV-driven HNSCC and a possible elevated presentation of HPV-encoded and/or mutation-derived neoepitopes following irradiation as compared to HPV-negative HNSCCs.
