Cross Program Topic Epigenetics@DKFZ

Epigenetic regulation has become a major research field for numerous DKFZ groups to elucidate pathological alterations in cancer epigenomes and associated disease mechanisms. In order to integrate novel technologies and insights from this field into current research projects, we have brought together researchers with interest in epigenetic questions under the Epigenetics@DKFZ initiative.

The goal of the initiative is to support joint activities related to epigenetic research at the DKFZ and to foster rapid exchange of information between groups. Established in early 2009 with a founding workshop in January, the initiative was followed by a series seminars and annual workshops with keynote lectures by Jörn Walter (Saarbrücken), Joseph Costello (San Francisco), Manel Esteller (Barcelona), Paul Soloway (Cornell), Axel Imhoff (Munich) and Yasuhiro Yamada (Kyoto) as well as the establishment of a cooperation between the research sites Barcelona, Freiburg and Heidelberg. Moreover, epigenetics@dkfz supports pilot projects to develop epigenetic analyses as well as education and training in epigenetics for students and researchers at the DKFZ. The program strengthens interdisciplinary research in cancer epigenetics at DKFZ and its collaboration partners both at the national and international level.

Activities

  • Foster interactions and collaborations between DKFZ groups working on epigenetic topics within the DKFZ via the epigenetics@dkfz community
  • Organization of the annual epigenetics@dkfz each January at the DKFZ
  • Cooperation between DKFZ research programs on pilot projects to develop epigenetic analyses
  • Support of education and training in epigenetics for students and scientists at the DKFZ
  • Establish, improve and maintain expertise and core technologies needed for epigenetic research in both individual laboratories and DKFZ core facilities
  • Support of researchers in Heidelberg to obtain national and international funding for epigenetic research projects.
  • Increase the visibility of DKFZ epigenetics activity on the national and international level
  • Here one can register to receive information on epigenetics@dkfz activities
