Leonardo Ayala leads the team on Intelligent Systems of Spectral Imaging (ISSI) since 2020. His studies in Physics in El Salvador and Argentina led him to a Master's degree at the intersection between Physics and Material Science at Instituto Balseiro (Argentina). Following his passion on applied sciences, he worked in an optics laboratory in El Salvador where he studied biological tissues with optical imaging methods. This encouraged him to pursue a PhD at the German Cancer Research Center on applied biophotonics for cancer research enabled by computer science. In particular, he develops optical imaging applications powered by machine learning with the aim of translating spectral imaging to clinical practice. Besides his academic and industrial interests, he is a big fan of alpacas, movies, and sports like soccer and gravel bike riding.
