Rainer Hoenig Foundation
Research in the field of bile duct cancer
In memory of her husband Rainer Hoenig, who died in 2018 as a result of bile duct cancer, his widow Hedvig Hoenig, née Schmidt, established the Rainer Hoenig Foundation in 2020 as a dependent consumer foundation under the umbrella of the German Cancer Research Center.
The Hoenig couple wanted to use the foundation to realize their shared wish to promote research into previously incurable cholangiocarcinoma. They wanted to make a contribution to increasing the chances of survival of those affected through improved early detection and new therapies.
"During his illness, my late husband and I unfortunately had to learn that cancer medicine had reached its limits and was unable to help him - despite all the efforts of the doctors treating him. We therefore decided to set up a foundation for the benefit of cancer research so that new knowledge could be gained that would expand and improve the treatment options for cholangiocarcinoma," says Hedvig Hoenig, explaining her motives.
Bile duct cancer has been on the rise in recent years in connection with non-viral hepatitis, which is caused by fatty liver, a chronic liver disease. To date, the majority of patients die within five years of diagnosis. The therapies currently available can only give patients time, but cannot cure the disease.

The purpose of the Rainer Hoenig Foundation is to promote science and research in the field of bile duct cancer (cholangiocellular carcinoma). Over the next few years, the foundation will fund a research project in the "Chronic Inflammation and Cancer" department of the German Cancer Research Center. Among other things, the funded research project will investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of tumor development, metastasis and recurrence as well as new immunotherapeutic approaches.
