COSIMO is the acroynm for Colorectal Cancer Multi-State Simulation Model, an in-house developed tool for the population-wide prediction of colorectal cancer incidence and mortality. COSIMO helps us to estimate the effectiveness of preventive measures and screening examinations in areas where little real-world evidence is available, e.g. outcomes over a lifelong timeframe or when directly comparing the effect of screening modalities to each other.

Colorectal Cancer Prevention Calculator
The demographic change leads to a strong increase in new colorectal cancer cases in many European countries, including Germany. Screening reduces the risk of developing colorectal cancer by approximately 70%. However, in Germany, currently less than 20% of eligible women and men make use of screening colonoscopy, an endoscopic procedure.
In this project, we assessed the effect of an increase in screening colonoscopy use on the expected number of incident colorectal cancer cases until 2060. In the web application (link below), the slider can be used to model an increase in screening participation. It becomes obvious that even to maintain the current level of new cases, a large increase in colorectal cancer screening uptake will be required.
