Heng studied biochemistry and obtained his bachelor's degree in McMaster University. In 2020, he started his master studies at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. During his masters, he studied the effect of gastric inhibitory polypeptide receptor (GIPR) on neuroendocrine tumor (NET) cells with the Groetzinger group in Charité Virchow hospital and studied the circadian rhythm in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells with the Granada group in Charité Comprehensive Cancer Center. He did his master's thesis on the spatial reconstruction of colorectal cancer single cell data under the supervision of Dr. Markus Morkel at the institute of pathology.
In 2022, he joined the Odom lab as a shared PhD student with the Gerstung lab. His PhD research is mainly focused on the characterization of the ecosystem of diverse cell types in the sarcoma tumor microenvironment using spatial transcriptomics and spatial genomics.
