STEM CELLS AND CANCER - 6TH INTERNATIONAL HEINRICH F.C. BEHR SYMPOSIUM

OCTOBER 3 – 5, 2010GERMAN CANCER RESEARCH CENTER (DKFZ), HEIDELBERG

Most cancers are not simply a mass of uniform tumor cells, but rather show a hierarchical organization. On top of that hierarchy are tumor cells which show significant similarities to normal stem cells and are thus called cancer stem cells (CSC). Importantly, reoccurrence after initial chemotherapy as well as metastasis formation is thought to be caused by therapy resistant cancer stem cells. In this symposium, the molecular and cellular basis of normal and malignant stem cells will be discussed and first approaches to target and eliminate CSCs will be presented.

The Symposium is mainly sponsored by the private F.C. Behr Foundation which has dedicated their 2010 conference, like 2006 and 2008 to the exciting topic of “Stem Cells and Cancer”. The 6th International Heinrich F.C. Behr Symposium will again be jointly organized by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Bethesda, and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The symposium will be hosted by the DKFZ in Heidelberg from October 3 – 5, 2010. We are expecting a highly interactive meeting sparked by a panel of internationally renowned speakers who will discuss their latest data with an audience of about 300 students and scientists. A poster session as well as a “meet the speaker” dinner party will further foster scientific exchange.

The organizers are proud to be able to present a program that covers a wide range of important aspects of stem cell biology and its link to cancer. Focus areas of the 2010 Symposium include:

  • Biology of stem cells
  • Epithelial stem cells and cancer
  • Hematopoietic and vascular stem cells
  • Stem cells in the nervous system
  • Epigenetics and reprogramming

Deadline for registration is September 23, 2010 (for poster registration September 17, 2010).
